This instruction is quite common on prescription pill bottles. Yet, a study found that nearly half of patients misunderstood what this or other common label instructions meant. An even more recent survey found that more than half of Americans do not take their prescription drugs as directed.

There are endless reasons why people do not comply with prescription drug instructions, as Kaiser Health reports, but many of these reasons tie back to health literacy.
