Walk | Walk to Cure Diabetes
Daniel Island - Charleston, SC

As many as 3 million Americans* have type 1 diabetes, a disease most often diagnosed in childhood that strikes suddenly, lasts a lifetime, and carries the constant threat of deadly complications, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation. JDRF’s mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Thanks to dramatic research progress, a cure is now within our reach.

The Walk draws people together in a healthy activity for a worthy cause, raising money to help find a cure for diabetes. It’s fun for families and builds camaraderie among company employees. Above all, it’s an event you will feel good about being a part of.

Walk | 2010 Hyatsville Kidney Walk
The Mall at Prince Georges, - Hyattsville, MD

The National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Walk is a fun, inspiring, community fundraiser which calls attention to the prevention of kidney disease and the need for organ donation. It’s also an opportunity for patients, family, friends and businesses to come together to support the millions of Americans with chronic kidney disease.

Thanks to the money raised through the walks, NKF is able to offer free health screenings for kidney disease, public and professional education programs, advocacy to make patients’ voices heard through legislative action, and a vital research program to identify new clinical treatments.

Symposium | E-Patients: The Techno Cultural Revolution of Health Consumers
Washington, DC

With the sharp rise in web-informed consumers and today’s fast paced communication technology and inclusive health care systems, information is readily available. Many health care systems now offer portable electronic records and electronic prescription services. The technologically savvy generation makes use of tools such as YouTube, blogs, and websites to share experiences in their health care. Yet, with 90 million Americans who do not understand how to read, comprehend, or use health information, will they be left behind in this techno cultural revolution? Net savvy consumers are now active members of their health care team and will be expected to know more than ever before. This symposium will focus on the interaction between technology, culture, and politics. The ethical, social, and privacy issues concerning these new technologies will also be discussed during lunch roundtables using case scenarios. The day will conclude with an interactive session demonstrating new and upcoming technologies such as personal health records and e-health tools.
