“Borderless” Health Care Would Help Seniors in Emergencies
Sunday, March 07, 2010 | AHIMA

Imagine your favorite feisty 75-year-old as our hypothetical patient, Mrs. Cruz. Born and raised in Santa Cruz, she now lives at a local senior housing complex. One evening, rushing to answer her telephone, she trips and falls, breaking her hip.

A central electronic health record database or a personal health record can alleviate stress in a crisis situation and supply doctors with the information they need in an emergency. Rama Khalsa, director of the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency, envisions a future where health information consistently improves patient outcomes, and where information access is “the rule rather than the exception.”
