Transitioning from Pediatric Care
Tuesday, April 13, 2010 | AHIMA

There’s no set time frame as to when a pediatric patient should begin seeing a general practitioner. Often, teens or pediatricians themselves simply feel that the patient is “too old” to see a children’s doctor.

Prepare your young adult for the transition by compiling a personal health record, just as Julie Wolter did with her two college-age sons.

Be mindful of privacy concerns as your children near age 18. According to The Yellin Center Blog:

HIPPA, a federal law which deals with the privacy of personal health information, protects communications between young people over 18 and their doctors. This is in addition to other state laws that may insure the privacy of communications between younger teens and their doctors in areas such as reproductive health.

Help your child establish a PHR and a relationship with a physician as he or she transitions from pediatric care. Your child may be more willing and able than you think.

About This Blog

Parents, welcome to the PHR blog where you can connect and communicate with health information management professionals and eventually other parents about managing your child’s healthcare. Have you ever been on your way to the doctor’s office with your child and wondered about the details – diagnosis, medications prescribed, vaccinations, etc. – of your last visit?

As a parent, you have so many responsibilities that it’s difficult to recall everything from day to day let alone last year. A personal health record can help ease your mind. This blog is a social network where you can interact with experts in the field to seek advice and tips for best practices in creating and maintaining your child’s personal health record and the best ways to use that information to play a more active role in their healthcare and simplify your life.
